When ever I tell people I foster dogs, the first question is “How can you give them up?” Believe me, they’ve taught me more than I could ever teach them, things like trust and forgiveness.  For instance there was the six month old German Shorthaired Pointer mix that belly crawled to me when I met him, a Maltese mix that coward in the corner of the backseat when I picked her up from the transport, the Wirehaired Terrier that had to be handed to me because he was too scared to walk, or the Cockapoo who’s tail was entirely matted and actually hurt him if touched. I once mentioned to
someone that I wish the dogs could tell us their stories, and she replied that we probably don’t want to know,
and I think she’s probably right.

Sure, there are pros and cons to fostering.  Sometimes you have messes in your house, and if you’re not careful you
can “lose” things, like slippers, mail, or the furniture attachment for the vacuum cleaner (not a good thing to “lose”
when you have dogs).  On the other hand, there’s always someone to greet you when you come home, give kisses,
play ball, walk with, cuddle on the couch or sleep in the crook of your arm.

I’ve never fostered a dog I didn’t like, and I’ve fostered a lot of dogs that I’ve fallen in love with, however, if I’d
have adopted any of the dogs I’ve mentioned above, there wouldn’t have been room for the others, and to know
that I’ve contributed to saving a dog and brought such joy to the life of a family, I have done my job!  This is truly a
rewarding experience and I also got to meet new friends along the way!
